Second student voice collection 13/5/2016

6/5/2016

Meaningful conversations were held with the target group, which were the CUSP students in my Level 2  and Level 3 Physics classes.

The lack of "effort" and the "hesitance" to ask questions were discussed with each individual student using the following questions:

1.Why do you think you tend to give up?

2.Why do you not ask me questions when you are not sure?

The answers and the conversations seem to reflect the following:

1. The sense of failure prevails from earliest memories so there is no need for effort. There was hardly any recollections of celebration for any successes but lots of failure. There seemed to be no or bare minimal effort utilized in everyday tasks with a rush to study for externals as the examination date looms nearer. The overall realistic goal was a mere achieved for any external but a merit seemed within reach with the internals since more teacher input was recognized such as practice feedbacks and praise.

2. The fear of seeming incompetent when comparing themselves with the rest of the class seems to be the main answer to not asking questions. The knowledge of not understanding the concept seems inconspicuous over the fact of what their peers will think of them. Interestingly, the teacher's perception is meaningless and irrelevant but the peers perception over-rules their desire to strive to improve.

The next step is to organize an observation of these students by appraiser.
